Requirement Groups

How Groups Work

Requirements are organized hierarchically:

  1. Degree - The overall program (Neuroscience BS)
  2. Groups - Categories of requirements (Core, Methods)
  3. Rules - Specific requirements within groups

Group Operators

Groups can require:

  • All - Complete every rule in the group
  • Any N - Complete at least N rules
  • Credits - Earn a minimum number of credits

Example Group

Distribution Requirements (Complete 3 of 5):
├── Cognitive Psychology (PSYC 21, 22, or 23)
├── Social Psychology (PSYC 31 or 32)
├── Developmental Psychology (PSYC 41 or 42)
├── Clinical Psychology (PSYC 51 or 52)
└── Biopsychology (PSYC 61 or 62)

Course Mapping

How Courses Apply

When you complete a course, the system:

  1. Checks if the course matches any requirement rules
  2. Applies the course to the most specific matching rule
  3. Updates the progress for that requirement group

Multiple Applications

Some courses may satisfy multiple requirements:

  • The system applies to the most specific requirement first
  • You can manually reassign courses in some cases
  • "Double counting" policies vary by degree

Viewing Course Applications

  1. Click on any completed course
  2. See the "Applies to" section
  3. View alternative applications if available

GPA Tracking

Overall GPA

Your cumulative GPA is calculated from:

  • All graded courses at Dartmouth
  • Transfer credits (if applicable)
  • Does not include P/F courses

Major GPA

The major GPA includes:

  • Courses counting toward major requirements
  • Upper-level electives in the major
  • May differ from overall GPA

GPA Requirements

Some requirements have GPA minimums:

  • Honors thesis: Usually 3.0+ in major
  • Certain advanced courses: May require 2.0+
  • Latin honors: Based on overall GPA

Credit Counting

Credit Types

TypeDescription
EarnedCredits from completed courses
In ProgressCredits from current enrollments
PlannedCredits from future planned courses

Graduation Requirements

To graduate, you typically need:

  • Minimum 35 course credits
  • Minimum credits in major (varies by program)
  • Residency requirement (courses at Dartmouth)

Exceptions and Overrides

Petitioning for Exceptions

Sometimes you need an exception:

  1. A course to count differently than default
  2. A substitution for a required course
  3. A waiver for a requirement

How to Request

  1. Discuss with your faculty advisor
  2. Complete the petition form
  3. Submit to the department
  4. Wait for approval (usually 1-2 weeks)

Viewing Approved Exceptions

Exceptions appear in your progress view:

  • Marked with a special icon
  • Shows the approval date and authority
  • Linked to the original requirement

Troubleshooting

Course Not Appearing

  • Course may take 24 hours to sync
  • Verify enrollment in the registrar system
  • Contact support for sync issues

Requirement Not Satisfied

  • Check the specific rule requirements
  • Some rules have additional constraints (grade, term)
  • Consult with your advisor

Incorrect GPA

  • GPA syncs from official records
  • Recent grades may not be reflected yet
  • Contact registrar for GPA disputes

Comparing to Official Audit

caution

PBS Knowledge progress tracking is a planning tool, not an official degree audit. Always verify with:

  • Your faculty advisor
  • The official Banner degree audit
  • The PBS department office

The official audit is the authoritative source for:

  • Graduation clearance
  • Financial aid requirements
  • Honors eligibility
