Course Management

View and manage the courses you teach through PBS Knowledge.

Course Overview

Viewing Your Courses

  1. Navigate to Teaching from the dashboard
  2. See courses organized by term
  3. Click any course for details

Course Information

Each course displays:

  • Course Code - Department prefix and number
  • Title - Official course title
  • Term - When the course is offered
  • Enrollment - Current student count
  • Status - Active, completed, cancelled

Current Term Courses

Course Dashboard

For active courses, you can:

  • View enrolled student list
  • Access course materials
  • See meeting times and locations
  • Link to Canvas (if integrated)

Student Roster

The roster shows:

  • Student names and class years
  • Major/minor declarations
  • Email addresses (for enrolled students)
  • Enrollment status

Course Actions

Available actions:

  • View Details - Full course page
  • Export Roster - Download student list
  • Syllabus - Upload or view syllabus
  • Textbooks - Manage required texts

Past Courses

Historical Data

View your teaching history:

  • All courses taught at Dartmouth
  • Final enrollment numbers
  • Course evaluations (if linked)
  • Materials you uploaded

Accessing Archives

  1. Go to TeachingHistory
  2. Filter by term, year, or course
  3. Click to view course details

Syllabi Management

Uploading a Syllabus

  1. Navigate to the course page
  2. Click SyllabusUpload
  3. Select your syllabus file (PDF recommended)
  4. Add optional description
  5. Click Save

Syllabus Visibility

Control who can see your syllabus:

  • Public - Anyone can view
  • Dartmouth - Dartmouth community only
  • Enrolled - Only enrolled students
  • Private - Only instructors

Updating Syllabi

  1. Go to the course syllabus section
  2. Click Replace
  3. Upload the new version
  4. Previous versions are archived

Textbook Management

Adding Textbooks

  1. Go to course page → Textbooks
  2. Click Add Textbook
  3. Search by ISBN, title, or author
  4. Select the correct edition
  5. Mark as required or optional

Textbook Information

For each textbook, enter:

  • Title - Book title
  • Author - Author names
  • ISBN - ISBN-10 or ISBN-13
  • Edition - Edition number
  • Required - Whether it's mandatory

Library Integration

Textbooks can link to:

  • Library catalog availability
  • Course reserves
  • Electronic access (if available)

Section Management

Understanding Sections

Courses may have multiple sections:

  • Lecture sections
  • Discussion sections
  • Lab sections

Section Details

Each section includes:

  • Section number
  • Meeting days and times
  • Room location
  • Enrollment cap
  • Instructor(s)

Cross-Listed Courses

For cross-listed courses:

  • One entry per listing
  • Shared enrollment information
  • Linked materials

Enrollment Data

Viewing Enrollment

See real-time enrollment:

  • Total enrolled vs. capacity
  • Waitlist status
  • Enrollment by class year
  • Major distribution

Historical charts show:

  • Enrollment over time
  • Comparison to department average
  • Seasonal patterns

Course Materials

Uploading Materials

You can upload:

  • Syllabi (PDF)
  • Lecture slides (PDF, PPTX)
  • Readings (with copyright compliance)
  • Assignment descriptions

File Organization

Materials are organized by:

  • Type (syllabus, readings, etc.)
  • Date uploaded
  • Visibility setting

Canvas Integration

If integrated with Canvas:

  • Materials sync automatically
  • Grades may import (if configured)
  • Announcements may link

Data Sources

Registrar Sync

Course data comes from:

  • Registrar's official records
  • ORC course catalog
  • Room scheduling system

Sync Schedule

  • Course assignments: Updated weekly
  • Enrollments: Updated daily
  • Grades: End of term only

Data Corrections

For incorrect data:

  • Contact the registrar for official changes
  • System reflects registrar data
  • Local edits don't override official records

Privacy Considerations

Student Data

You can view:

  • Names of enrolled students
  • Academic information relevant to course
  • Contact information for course purposes

FERPA Compliance

  • Don't share student information externally
  • Use official channels for communication
  • Report any data concerns

Troubleshooting

Course Not Appearing

  1. Verify assignment with registrar
  2. Wait for weekly sync
  3. Check you're looking at correct term
  4. Contact support if still missing

Enrollment Mismatch

  1. Enrollment syncs daily
  2. Recent changes may not appear
  3. Official count is in Banner

Upload Failed

  1. Check file size limits (50MB)
  2. Verify supported format
  3. Try a different browser
  4. Contact support for assistance
